Small Business Insurance Checklist: What Coverage Your Florida Business Needs
Running a small business means balancing people, vehicles, property, contracts, customers, and cash flow. This practical checklist helps Florida business owners organize the coverage questions worth reviewing with an insurance professional. It is a starting point, not a determination that every business needs every coverage listed.

Gather these details before your review
Having the following information ready can make a coverage-gap conversation more useful:
- Current policies, limits, exclusions, and deductibles
- Renewal dates and any recent claims or incidents
- Employee count, job duties, and business structure
- Business-owned, leased, hired, or personal vehicles used for work
- Property, equipment, inventory, and business personal property values
- Leases, customer contracts, lender requirements, and certificate requests
- Data, payment systems, professional services, and board or investor responsibilities
Eight coverage areas to review
The checklist is designed for practical review. Whether a coverage fits depends on the business, its operations, contracts, and risk profile.
General liability insurance
Review third-party bodily injury, property damage, and advertising injury exposures connected with business operations. A landlord or customer contract may request proof of coverage.
Workers’ compensation
Review employee injury obligations and current Florida requirements. The Florida CFO explains that requirements vary by industry, employee count, and entity organization.
Commercial auto and fleet insurance
Review business-owned or business-used vehicles, including contractor trucks, delivery vans, food trucks, and service fleets. Confirm drivers, vehicle use, and hired or non-owned exposures.
Cyber and crime insurance
Review selected risks involving data incidents, network events, fraud, theft, and social engineering. Consider the sensitive information and payment processes your business handles.
Commercial property insurance
Review buildings, equipment, inventory, furniture, and improvements, along with leases and replacement values. Consider how a covered loss could affect ongoing operations.
Professional liability / errors and omissions
Review claims alleging that professional advice, services, or work caused financial harm. This can be relevant to consultants, designers, technology firms, and other advice-based businesses.
Directors and officers liability
Review management-decision and governance exposures for corporations, nonprofits, boards, investors, and other organizations with directors or officers.
Commercial umbrella / excess liability
Review whether additional liability limits may be appropriate above underlying policies or required by a contract. Confirm underlying limits and attachment requirements.
Florida requirements and source guidance
Florida law does not make all eight coverages universally required for every small business. Workers’ compensation requirements depend on factors including industry, employee count, and entity organization. Contracts, leases, lenders, vehicle financing, and industry rules can create separate requirements.
How to use your completed checklist
- Mark the coverages you may need based on your operations, contracts, employees, vehicles, property, and services.
- Confirm what you already have by checking the declarations pages and endorsements for each policy.
- Write down missing limits, renewal dates, certificate requests, and questions for review.
- Discuss potential gaps with a qualified insurance professional. The goal is a useful review, not an automatic purchase of all eight products.
Educational disclaimer
This checklist is for general education only. It is not legal advice or a policy recommendation, and it does not promise that a policy covers every loss. Coverage needs, limits, exclusions, and requirements depend on the business, its operations, contracts, and current Florida rules. Confirm details with a qualified insurance professional and the relevant government source.
